Achyranthes aspera (common names: chaff-flower, prickly chaff flower, devil’s horsewhip,Sanskrit: अपामार्ग apāmārga) is a species of plant in the family Amaranthaceae.
It is distributed throughout the tropical world.
The flowers and leaves are ground into a paste to clear phlegm, relieve congestion, and treat asthma, bronchitis, and coughs.
The juice of this plant is a potent ingredient for a mixture of wall plaster, according to the Samarāṅgaṇa Sūtradhāra, which is a Sanskrit treatise dealing with Śilpaśāstra (Hindu precepts of art and construction).
It also improves digestive fire, relieves bloating, aids bowel regulation, and is traditionally used to treat hemorrhoids (piles).

Nayuruvi is also very useful in dropsy, piles, boils and for colic in children.
Extracts are sometimes used to assist in blood sugar regulation and managing cholesterol or excess fat.
It is also used as a cure for cough.
The root decoction and seed powder act as diuretics, commonly used to dissolve kidney stones and manage urinary tract infections.
The fibrous stems are also traditionally used as a natural toothbrush (datun) to strengthen gums and clean teeth.
